Junior Racers is an advanced skills development program for experienced skiers born in 2006-2008 who are passionate about Biathlon and consider it their primary winter sport activity.
This program is designed to develop and refine skiing skills including speed, power and aerobic fitness, strength and flexibility, and to develop a good foundation of shooting skills. At this age participants are expected to train up to 3 times per week, including training on their own. Athletes in this age group will participate in 4-8 competitions during the season, including travel to one or two away BC Cup events during the winter.
Parent involvement is a required part of our Junior Racers program. This requirement can be fulfilled by helping with coaching, doing setup/takedown at practices or by assisting with the administration of the program. Parent assistance will be required at all biathlon competitions at Whistler Olympic Park.
Parents who are interested in coaching or volunteering at events are encouraged to take a Silver Coach workshop and an Entry Level Officials Course.
In order to register in our Junior Racers program, you must meet the following prerequisites:
– previous participation in our Biathlon Bears or Junior Racers program, or equivalent experience
– 2018/2019 membership with the Sea to Sky Nordics (memberships can be purchased starting in September)
– register with Biathlon Canada as a “Recreational Athlete”
Junior Racers must provide their own ski equipment. Skate skiing and classic skiing equipment is required.
Skate roller skis are required, with roller ski pole tips, bike helmet, and high-visibility clothing/vest.
What is Included in the Program Fee
Program fees cover coaching, use of club biathlon rifles, ammunition and lane fees at training sessions.
An additional “team fee” will be applicable at competitions for coaching, race ammunition and waxing.
Trail passes and entry fees for competitions are not included in the program fee. Discount season passes to Whistler Olympic Park and Lost Lake can be purchased in connection with program registration. Trail passes to Cypress are not included in the program fee and must be purchased separately.
Junior Racers starts on September 11 and ends on the weekend of March 16/17. The program consists of one weekend training session (choose between Saturdays and Sundays), and up to two weekday sessions (Tuesdays and Wednesdays). Junior Racers are expected to attend at least one of weekday training sessions. If they can do both days that is great but if they are only able to do one due to other activities that is fine.
Saturdays and Sundays feature shooting and skiing training from 10:00-15:00. Saturday sessions will be at Whistler Olympic Park. Sunday sessions will be either at Whistler Olympic Park or the Squamish Legacy Sports Park (to be determined based on coach availability).
Tuesdays and Wednesday sessions are offered in North Vancouver, Squamish and Whistler in the fall, and at Cypress, Lost Lake and Whistler Olympic Park in the winter. Times are from 17:00-18:30 in Squamish and Whistler, and from 18:30-20:00 in North Vancouver/Cypress.
